“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. – Matthew 7:24-28
Contrary to popular belief, there is truth. In this age of religous pluralism it is often seen as a virtue to proclaim that there is no absolute truth and that all religions are right, but that’s simply not true, and it’s left many of us confused and unhappy, with no solid ground to stand on in this chaotic world, and that brings anxiety because we never know what to do. We’re told it’s all relative, and so we float along trying to figure out what to do with our lives, but we have no guidance because we have adopted the view that there is no truth.
We’re told to just do what we feel and believe is right, but we’re fallible. What if we don’t know what’s right? Any humble person would admit that they don’t always know what’s right. What makes matters even worse for us is being told there is no right or wrong, which makes things even more confusing for us. However, everyone knows there is right and wrong. You’ll find that out very quickly if I decided it was right for me to come into your home and murder you and your family. That’s obviously not right. But with the obvious wrong of murder left aside, there are many other things that we just can’t know and understand in and of ourselves without some help.
We need guidance, and we need an objective, trustworthy and true form of guidance that lies outside our subjective minds. I don’t desire to argue right now for why we can trust the Bible as our authoritative guide for truth and guidance. There are many others that have done that better than I ever could. I just want to express that we have truth that we can stand on that is found in the scriptures. We have a place that we can look and have our minds renewed and attain guidance and knowledge of what is true about the world and how we are to live in it. We have the bible as our authoritative guide.
Having this truth that we can stand on can bring some peace into our lives. It may not bring comfort or pleasure. It may even bring much pain and suffering into your life if you follow the guidance, but at least you will be living a life that matters, and that will bring you stability in this unstable, crazy world. That’s what I want for you. I want you to be free from having to live with the confusion and anxiety that comes from believing that you cannot know anything. I wan’t to give you a place to stand.
And don’t let the world fool you. They will say how silly you are and what a bigot you are for thinking that you know the truth, but they are the ones who are foolish. They are the ones left to live a life with no meaning and with no truth to stand on. They are confused. You don’t have to be, and they don’t have to be either. Go to the Bible and have your mind renewed through it and by the living God. He will will reveal it to you if you seek it out diligently. He is a rewarder of those who seek him.
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” – Matthew 7:7-8
- Let Go of the lie that truth can’t be known
- Let God renew your mind daily and give you truth to stand on by reading the Bible
- Apply the scriptures to your life and seek to live out with God’s help anything that can be lived out and applied to your life
